Johnny Appleseed’s Apple on a Fall Branch

Students will be able to celebrate the return of the crisp autumn air and the tale of Johnny Appleseed by transforming each of themselves into Mr. Appleseed and Ms. Appleseed to continue in the footsteps of the legendary Johnny Appleseed and his positive message about sharing and caring for the apple trees. They will be “growing” their very own apple that hangs from a branch as well as plant and count the seeds needed inside the core of this special message of sharing that Mr. Appleseed has brought to us that resonates to this day and beyond from generation to generation! They will also learn about using the design element of symmetry to create balance, harmony, and order in their artwork just like the traditional wycinanki that was first started in the 1800’s by Polish peasants to decorate their houses. They will also incorporate a layering process to make a more intricate design and to practice their fine motor skills. The drum is broadly considered to be the first musical instrument used by humans. For the Native Americans the drumming represents the heartbeat of the earth herself.
